This comes after 'blood red' paint was thrown on Senate House earlier this week

Pro-Palestine protestors are suspected of planning to disrupt graduation in Cambridge.

The group Palestine Action has told The Telegraph that it would “continue to apply necessary pressure to end complicity in the Gaza genocide”.

The statement to The Telegraph came days after the police were called to investigate red paint thrown by protestors over the university’s Senate House.

Senate House is where graduation ceremonies are traditionally held for Cambridge. It was set to be used for this year’s graduations, scheduled for a week after the paint was splattered.

The police were called at 3am on Saturday 22nd June when they were alerted of the paint by university security.

This follows weeks of protesting from pre-Palestine protestors, including the encampment outside Kings’ College in central Cambridge, which has been there since May.

Palestine Action claimed responsibility for the red paint, which covered the stairs, windows and front doors and was described in a statement by the university as an “act of vandalism”.

Palestine Action claims responsibility for the paint, however the group also admits other Cambridge students had a part in the process.

Students set to graduate have been sent emails warning them that graduation ceremonies next week may also be disrupted as part of the continued action.

This also occurred in May when graduation ceremonies were held in Downing College rather than the traditional Senate House due to the pro-Palestine encampment expanding to the lawn outside Senate House. This encampment was later withdrawn, however the university still stated that graduation was moved to an “undisclosed location” (Downing).

The emails sent by university officials to graduating students reveal the university’s concerns about continued action. It suggests that the ceremony for absent students will be adapted for the current cohort, editing the “in absentia” Latin grace.

Palestine Action shares that it “can neither confirm nor deny if we will disrupt the graduation ceremonies” adding that “all universities in Gaza have been damaged” as context for their protest action.

It also shared that the red paint on Senate House is “blood-red” to reflect the “Palestinian bloodshed, which soaks the university’s financial records, research output, and historical legacy”.

The paint was washed away on Tuesday 25th June, and a spokesperson for the university has said that they look forward to graduation “in the Senate House this week”.

However, they also added that there are “always contingency plans in place to manage any form of disruption in ways that will ensure students graduate in a manner that is fitting of the occasion”.

Benjamin Faux has been described as a 'gentle young man, with a lovely warm smile'

A University of Cambridge student killed himself after finding out he was unable to progress to fourth year, an inquest has heard.

Benjamin Faux was previously a student at Cambridge before he was rejected for a Master’s in science and decided to continue his studies at University of Reading, The Telegraph reports.

He studied natural science at Cambridge for three years, completing his undergraduate degree in August 2022. Ben was then rejected for a Master’s, missing out on continuing his studies by only a few marks.

In a statement, his parents described Ben as a “gentle young man with a lovely, warm smile” and a “high academic achiever”.

via fundraiser

The inquest heard that he told a member of the mental health crisis team that he felt “very disappointed” and said he “could have done better” after being rejected from Cambridge.

The inquest has also found that he spoke to another mental health crisis nurse, saying: “I don’t have a future – I would like to end being in pain and tired”.

After his rejection, the student’s “intensifying” suicidal ideation was also not picked up within Reading University.

At Reading he was “completely disengaged” from his studies, not attending the laboratory and “staying indoors a lot and playing video games”, the inquest found.

His father, David, told the inquest: “If a first-year chemistry student does not attend the laboratory once, they are hunted down mercilessly”.

David contrasted this with the treatment of his son, who in January 2023 “was not attending the laboratory and was not obtaining the data needed for his dissertation”. Despite this the university did not flag his absences as a cause for concern.

On 24th April 2023 Ben agreed with his academic supervisor to suspend his studies. Ben concealed this from his parents, and the university never followed up despite it being agreed with his supervisor.

Ben never formally suspended his studies but less than four months later he was found dead in his student room.

The inquest is still in-progress.

Imagine being called a smart girl by Olivia Rodrigo

A uni grad has written her entire dissertation on Olivia Rodrigo and actually got her to sign it at her concert in Lisbon. I am obsessed!

Lorenza Sofrá is an economics and business grad from LUISS Guido Carli University in Rome. Her thesis is titled: “Navigating the Modern Career Landscape: A Comparative Analysis of Olivia Rodrigo’s Career Trajectory and the Protean and Boundaryless Career Model” and it explores Olivia Rodrigo’s career path.

But at the final show of the Europe leg of the GUTS Tour in Lisbon, Lorenza managed to get noticed by Olivia herself who spotted her sign from the crowd and signed her dissertation. “I was in shock and couldn’t believe it was happening,” Lorenza told The Tab. “I was completely overwhelmed, crying uncontrollably.”

Lorenza has been a huge fan of Olivia Rodrigo ever since the start of her career. “Even before she released Driver’s License,” she said. But she believes she shares some “remarkable similarities” with Oliva that make her music extremely relatable to her, including that they were both born in 2003 and are both Pisces.

“Olivia is the only artist I am completely obsessed with and I never get tired of listening to her. I feel a deep connection to her and her work, which is why I knew I wanted to include her in my thesis. Initially, I didn’t anticipate that my thesis would be entirely about her, but my strong connection to her artistry made it an inevitable choice.”

Lorenza wasn’t initially planning on writing her whole diss on Olivia and her work as she “didn’t think it would be possible” so originally thought about just including her in some way. But her final proposal was all about her and “to my surprise, my supervisor approved it,” she told The Tab.

The Italian student really enjoyed writing her Olivia Rodrigo diss and she said writing about such a fun topic definitely made it more relaxing and enjoyable. But one of the highlights of the whole process was that she actually got to speak to Jennifer Dustman, Olivia’s vocal coach from when she was younger. “She offered incredible insights into the early stages of Olivia’s career, which added a fascinating dimension to my work,” Lorenza said.

For her work, Lorenza “delved into the smallest details of Olivia’s career, ensuring a comprehensive analysis. In the final chapter, I connected all the elements to explain which type of career path Olivia Rodrigo is following.”

So after all the hard work, she said she was determined to be noticed by Olivia and get her to sign her dissertation. So before the Lisbon show she decided to make a sign which reads: ““I wrote my bachelor’s degree thesis about you, can you sign it?”

She started queuing at the venue around 11am to get near the front to try and be noticed and she did! As she was holding up the sign, Olivia noticed it and said: “Oh my gosh. There’s a sign that says ‘I wrote my bachelor’s degree thesis about you, can you sign it?’ Fuck yes, smart girl! Oh my god! I wonder what your work is about, wow. Look at that!”

She then passes it to her and she looks through it and says: “Oh my god she really did! This is amazing! It’s so thick I think this is thicker than my own diary!”

She read out the title and added: “Wow, you’re so cool! This is like the coolest thing ever, you’re so smart you are making me feel smarter! Congrats smart girl” before signing it and writing: “All my love, thanks for coming, Olivia Rodrigo.”

Whilst it was happening, Lorenza said: “I found myself on the floor, overwhelmed with joy and crying. She mentioned my thesis two more times during the show, once before performing jealousy, jealousy and again when she caught a shirt from a fan. It was unbelievable and surreal.

“Olivia is truly the sweetest person. She was incredibly kind throughout our interaction, taking her time to check out my thesis, read the title, and even call me smart a few times. I am so grateful to her and couldn’t be happier.”

The only other UK uni to make it into the top 20 is Edinburgh. At 13th overall, it is the second-best Russell Group uni city. A much smaller city compared to others on the list, it has a population of 488,000.

1. London

And officially the number one city you can live in as a student across the planet is London. With an overall perfect score of 100, London is home to a huge 18 unis featured in the QS World uni Rankings 2025, with two of these (Imperial and UCL) making it into the top 10. London is fourth for employer activity and third for student view overall. However, it is no surprise that London ranks poorly for affordability, at 126th overall.

He smashed in the heads of two sleeping students with a hammer before trying to kill a teacher

A student at a £43,000 a year private school has been found guilty of three counts of attempted murder after smashing the skulls of two students with a hammer before trying to kill a teacher.

The 17-year-old, who was studying at Blundell’s private school in Devon, claimed to be sleepwalking but carried out a “horrific attack” with intent to kill, the trial heard.

The attack took place on the 9th June last year and the two victims, who were 15 and 16 at the time, were taken to hospital in life-threatening conditions and now will never recover, the court heard.

After a two-month trial, he was found guilty today on all three counts of attempted murder by a majority verdict and will be sentenced in October.

The student said he never intended to kill the two students or teacher. “I feel very terribly sorry for all three individuals because of what I did to them. I feel very sorry for everyone, the families and themselves,” he told the jury.

Via SWNS

The student was wearing only his boxers and claimed he was sleepwalking when he carried out the attacks. He told the court he had the hammers to “prepare for the zombie apocalypse.”

The trial heard the two students had gone to bed and the victims were fast asleep and had been since before midnight.

Prosecutors told the trial the defendant then decided to “put into action a plan that he had been fermenting in his head for some time.”

James Dawes KC, told the jury: “That plan was to kill and he decided to do it while they slept in their own beds – and he decided to do it with a hammer.”

The trial heard he owned four claw hammers and selected one to then quietly climb up onto the top of the first cabin bed.

The lawyer added: “The boys were asleep and they both had heads on pillows and then he smashed the hammers into their heads as they slept. Multiple times.

“He also hit arms and backs, he didn’t just use the flat end of the hammer, he used the claw as well to strike these boys. These blows smashed their skulls. it broke through the skull driving pieces of bone into the brain.”

Blows to the back of one of the victims damaged his spleen, and broke a rib with its now sharp edge puncturing one of his lungs.

“Blood went everywhere”, he added.

Via SWNS

The student then went for the second victim who was also asleep and climbed up and he “smashed a hammer down onto his head multiple times as he slept”, the jury heard.

“Those blows broke his skull, driving pieces of bone into his brain and the membranes around the brain. He hit his upper arm with the hammer, claw side.”

The court heard it was “astonishing” that both students survived but James Dawes added: “Sadly neither of them will ever be the same again as they were prior to the attack. Both heads are permanently damaged and cognitive functions are not as they were.

“Mercifully neither has any memories of these attacks – they were both asleep. They recall going to bed and waking up in hospital some days later.”

The teacher Henry Roffe-Silvester then went to the students’ room to investigate the noise and was also attacked. As soon as he opened the door the student attacked him with a hammer. “He only knew he had been hit after he had been hit and did not see the blow coming,” the lawyer said.

“He was initially hit on the top of the head and a second blow struck him down onto the head. Mr Roffe-Silvester retreated down the corridor with (the defendant) striking him as he went down. Aiming at his face and head. Blood was pouring down his face and he was shouting at him to stop.”

But he did not stop and managed to get six blows to his head before the teacher managed to grab the hammer and stop the attack. He described the student as “expressionless” and said he “appeared to be on a mission” until he finally calmed down and squatted against a wall.

Via SWNS

The jury heard the student say he was stressed about a number of issues, including with his brother and owing money to a girl. He told one boy he had hammers because he was “watching horror movies lately and had them to protect himself.”

One paramedic who arrived at the scene described it as the “worst scene he had ever encountered in 20 years of ambulance care.” Another said he had served in Iraq and had never seen such a scene of carnage.

The jury was also played a 999 call made by another student. The student told the call handler: “He’s been hit on the head with a hammer. I just woke up to some shouting – a teacher and student have been hit with a hammer.”

In his evidence, the student who has now been found guilty of three counts of attempted murder, said: “I remember being in the room. The room was covered in blood. What I could see was blood. I didn’t hear anything.

“I remember walking out to the corridor.”

He added: “I knew something really bad had gone on and everyone was looking towards me. I didn’t remember doing anything so the only rational thing I was thinking was that I was sleepwalking.”

The boy said he did not intend to kill either Henry Roffe-Silvester or the two students.

He added: “I feel very terribly sorry for all three individuals because of what I did to them. I feel very sorry for everyone, the families and themselves.”

The 663-feet deep Dean's Blue Hole has never been explored, locals call it 'a portal to hell'

The co-founder of OceanGate, who created the Titan submersible that last year imploded on a trip to the Titanic killing all on board, is organising a trip to a sinkhole that has never previously been explored. Guillermo Söhnlein co-founded OceanGate with Stockton Rush, who was piloting the Titan submersible when it imploded last year.

Guillermo Söhnlein left OceanGate in 2013, and then founded another company dealing with underwater exploration called Blue Marble Exploration. The upcoming expedition the company is after is a trip down the 663-feet unexplored sinkhole in the Bahamas known as Dean’s Blue Hole.

Whilst divers and free divers have explored the area before, Blue Marble Exploration will be doing the first manned submersible trip down to the bottom, where the crew “will be operating in complete darkness.” As per the Blue Marble Exploration website, the company says “Locals believe that Dean’s is a portal to hell and the Devil himself lurks in the black depths.

Dean’s Blue Sinkhole. Via Christian Afonso on Flickr.

“Each year, several people drown in Dean’s due to a variety of misfortunes. We fully expect to find human remains and prepare to handle those situations with proper respect for the families.”

Not exactly making me want to sign up. And that’s before you even see the fee the expedition would set you back. Blue Marble Exploration has not yet stated if the price will be in the same ballpark as OceanGate’s $250,000 price tag for the Titan mission to the Titanic, but you can sign up on the “Join the expedition” section of its website.

Guillermo Söhnlein, the organiser of the sinkhole trip, gave several interviews last year when the OceanGate Titan submersible imploded killing all five on board just an hour and 45 minutes into its decent to the Titanic. Speaking to Reuters, Söhnlein said “Let’s figure out what went wrong, let’s learn lessons and let’s get down there again.

“If anything, what we’re feeling is an even stronger imperative to continue doing this kind of exploration work. I think it’s important for humanity, and it’s probably the best way to honour the five crew members who gave up their lives doing something that they loved.”

The QS Best Student Cities 2025 Ranking is out

Your uni might come top in rankings for boring things like research quality, but what is your city actually like to live in as a student? QS has just released its Best Student Cities Ranking 2025 and it ranks what cities around the world are like to live in as a student.

The ranking takes into account factors such as the proportion of the city’s population that are students, how many unis the city has which are in the QS World University Rankings, how safe the city is, affordability, pollution levels, employment levels and the percentage of students who decided to stay in the city after graduating.

Two British universities have made it into the top 15 of the ranking, with London actually taking the top spot overall.

So, these are the best student cities you can live in across the world right now, according to the QS Best Student Cities Ranking 2025:

Just squeezing into the top 10, Montreal gets an overall score of 92.1 out of 100. In terms of affordability, Montréal is the joint 75th most affordable city in the world and ranks 15th overall for student view.

9. Berlin

7. Paris

Via Chris Karidis on Unsplash

With an overall score of 94.6 out of 100 Paris has 12 unis featured in the top 10 of the QS World rankings. It is sixth in the world for employer activity and 15th for desirability overall,

6. Sydney

It might be below Melbourne but at number six, Sydney is up one place from last year. Although scoring really low for affordability at 130th, it’s ranked fourth for student mix due to its large and diverse student community.

5. Melbourne

Melbourne is fifth in the QS Student Cities Ranking 2025. It also ranks fifth for desirability and second for student view. There are 7 Melbourne-based unis that made it into the QS World Ranking, the best of these being the University of Melbourne, at 13th in the world.

4. Munich

Via ian kelsall on Unsplash

At fourth overall, Munich has a score of 97.7 out of 100. The second German city to make the 1op 10, Munich is ranked eighth for employer activity. But the German students really are thriving as no tuition fees are charged for undergrads at public unis in the majority of Germany, regardless of nationality.

3. Seoul

The third best student city is Seoul in South Korea. Seoul actually tops the rankings indicator, with a massive 20 of its unis making it into the QS World Rankings 2025, the highest being Seoul National University, at 31st in the world. Seoul is ranked second for employer activity but 91st for affordability.

2. Tokyo

The capital of Japan, Tokyo is the second best city you can live in as a student for 2025 It is also the best in Asia. It has an overall score of 99.2 out of 100 and comes top overall for both employer activity and desirability. But Tokyo is so big that even with 18 internationally ranked unis it still has a very low proportionate student population.

1. London

Via Benjamin Davies on Unsplash

And officially the number one city you can live in as a student across the planet is London. With an overall perfect score of 100, London is home to a huge 18 unis featured in the QS World uni Rankings 2025, with two of these (Imperial and UCL) making it into the top 10. London is fourth for employer activity and third for student view overall. However, no surprise that London ranks poorly for affordability, at 126th overall.

The police officer apparently had no clue who he was

In the early hours of Tuesday morning, pop star Justin Timberlake was arrested in the state of New York for driving whilst intoxicated. Since the news broke, more details have come out of the incident including his mugshot, pictures of Timberlake in handcuffs and more information about what actually went down at the roadside. Here’s a rundown of everything we know about the arrest whilst Justin Timberlake waits for his court appearance next month.

He was arrested in Sag Harbor area of the Hamptons

The initial arrest was made in the early hours of Tuesday morning and Justin Timberlake had reportedly been dining and drinking with pals at a hotel. The chief of Sag Harbor police said he couldn’t drive staying in the correct lane and ran a stop sign. His eyes were reportedly bloodshot and gassy.

The officer had no clue who he was

According to Page Six, the young Sag Harbor officer who pulled Justin Timberlake over at the scene of the arrest didn’t recognise him and didn’t even know who he was when he saw his name. When he got arrested, Timberlake reportedly muttered under his breath “This is going to ruin the tour.”

He has several dates of his tour across the US this week and throughout the next months.

Um, so it turns out that people who go to private school or a Russell Group uni will have better health when they’re middle-aged. All the Surrey school, Exeter uni and Clapham grad pipeline girlies are quaking right now.

New research found that by age 46, people who studied at a Russell Group university performed better on memory tests like recalling worlds and naming animals, and tests measuring attention and visual abilities.

Whereas if mummy and daddy forked out for a private school, you are more likely to have lower blood pressure, be a healthy weight and perform better on cognitive tasks.

For example, attending private school was linked with a 14 per cent lower body mass index, while attending a Russell Group university was linked to a 16 per cent better memory and 10 per cent better naming ability.

People who went to private school had an average BMI of 26.9, compared with 28.6 for state or public school students, and a pulse rate of 66.3 beats per minute compared with 68.4 for non-private school students.

The link was still found even when researchers took household income into account, suggesting that going to private school actually makes more of a difference than family background. Going to Grammar school was also associated with better cardiovascular and cognitive health than a state school.

The study, led by UCL, studied 8,000 people born in the 1970s and now in middle age. The type of school each person had attended was categorised into private, grammar, comprehensive and other. Everyone who had a degree was asked at the age of 42 about the first university they had attended. Of the 8m000 studied 554 went to a Russell Group uni and 570 went to private school. It was published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health by the British Medical Journal.

The researchers said: “Our findings suggest that the type of education could potentially contribute to understanding links between education and health.

“If this association is causal, future policies aimed at reducing health inequalities could take education quality into account as well as attainment.”
